Kate Middleton’s tiara: Jewelry designers sketch dream tiaras

According to tradition, a royal bride wears a tiara on her wedding day. Queen Elizabeth II wore a tiara for her wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh, as did Princess Diana, who wore the famous diamond Spencer tiara, a family heirloom piece. What tiara will princess-to-be Kate Middleton wear if she so chooses to for her April 29th nuptials to Prince William? A likely conclusion would be that the Queen will lend her a tiara from the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom collection. However, in anticipation of this momentous royal accessory, InStyle tapped the creative minds of some of our favorite jewelry designers to see what they would design for Middleton’s special day. See tiara sketches for Middleton from Chopard, Alexis Bittar, Cathy Waterman, and more in the gallery.

Royal Asscher
Since its founding in 1854, Royal Asscher has a long history with royalty, often designing pieces for the Crown Jewels collection. Now, one of Royal Asscher’s designers—Canadian jewelry designer Reena Ahluwalia—sketched a tiara for Middleton. “This tiara is set with 36 Royal Asscher-cut diamonds, as well as pear and round shaped white diamonds,” said Ahluwalia. “The tiara is placed on the forehead, which is inspired by 1920s style and the Strathmore Rose Tiara placement. We have imbued our tiara with romance and wishes for love that is long-lasting. Flowers and buds represent nature's most beautiful creations and here they symbolize the blossomed love between Kate and Prince William.”

Van Cleef and Arpels
Historically-rooted jewelry house Van Cleef and Arpels, which was founded in 1896, described its sketch as a “tiara set in 18-karat white gold with round and pear-shaped diamonds, and round sapphires.” Van Cleef & Arpels knows a thing or two about dressing famous political women, as previous designs by the label have been worn by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, and the Duchess of Windsor.

Chopard
Chopard, a jewelry house founded in 1860, designed a tiara that features hundreds of pear-shaped and round diamonds. Marion Cotillard and Kate Beckinsale are just a few of the celebrity fans who love this jewelry.

Alexis Bittar
“Elegant with a hint of art nouveau would be a great chic addition,” explained designer Alexis Bittar of his design, whose graphic jewelry has been worn by Michelle Obama, Natalie Portman, and Cameron Diaz.
